If you are visiting Greece, you are most likely looking to fly into Athens International Airport of Eleftherios Venizelos, which is how the vast majority of international travellers arrive in Greece.
A few insider tips for the first-time visitors: Athens International Airport (AIA) was built fairly recently by a German contractor called “Hochtief”. At the time of completion of the airport in 2002, Lufthansa, which is the German National Airliner was given preferential treatment in certain respects. Nothing illegal and nothing that affects your travels. However, keep that in mind when you are booking flights to AIA. If you are flying Lufthansa, you will probably get to a Gate close to the check out point, and you might pay less in Airport Fees (something that we have not verified but out of experience, Lufthansa fares into Athens are somehow very competitive overall).
Other options include flying into Thessaloniki, which is the second largest city, located in Northern Greece, and serviced by many European Airliners directly from cities in Central or Northern Europe.
If you are not concerned with visiting Athens and flying in Greece from somewhere in Europe, you might be able to catch a flight directly to one of the islands.
Many Airliners serve Greece. Your best option for a good deal would be to look for tickets into one of the major travel websites, such as Expedia, Travelocity, Orbitz, Kayak or others.
Yet, depending on where you are flying from, you might find better deals or more convience at one of the options below:
- Aegean Airlines – Greek Airliner serving Athens, Thessaloniki & some islands with various domestic and European Flights.
- EasyJet – For the Budget Traveller. Flights from Athens to London and other European Capitals
- There are other charter flights available and arranged by travel agents and charter agents specializing in travel to Greece. If you are flying from Australia or the United States, you might be able to get a very good deal in one of those charter flights but you might also have to compromise your flight dates.
